Advancing Second Language Writing & Systemic Functional Linguistic
I am an Assistant Professor of Language Education at the School of Education & Languages, Hong Kong Metropolitan University. My current research interests are:
- Second Language Writing
- Systemic Functional Linguistics
- Teaching English/Chinese as a Second Language
- Research Synthesis and Meta-analysis in Applied Linguistics
About My Work
I am a passionate language teacher educator and applied linguist trained in both Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL). My research focuses on second language writing, particularly through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). I view writing as a meaning-making process, and I am committed to integrating SFL into applied linguistics research.
Key Contributions
- My PhD research investigated how Chinese adolescent L2 writers (ages 15-16) use linguistic resources to construct meaning in their writing.
- I apply SFL principles to teacher training, curriculum design, and L2 writing material development.
- I conduct research synthesis and meta-analyses to explore trends in SFL, including language description, grammatical metaphor, projection, genre, and translation studies.
- My goal is to develop an SFL-informed pedagogical grammar to make linguistic resources more explicit to L2 teachers and learners.
